Sources & Goals

The goals of skills competition are not only evaluating contenders’ skills but also encouraging young technicians to attend vocational education and training. Besides, it is expected to serve the function of promoting social awareness, arousing people’s interests, reviewing the achievements of vocational education and training, and enhancing the skills of young technicians.
In the present, the R.O.C. (Taiwan) government is devoting to developing technology-intensive and service industry, resulting in the great demands of technicians with high quality. In addition to actively promoting vocational education and training with skills certification, holding skills competitions is also influential to encouraging young people to attend technical education and training.

I. National Skills Competition(全國技能競賽)

The National Skills Competition was taken place since 1968 and be held annually. All the vocational training centers, vocational high schools, and enterprises from various industries send their best technicians to compete in this grand event. National Skills Competition is the national contest to elect qualified competitors to attend International Skills Competition. Conforming to the regulations of WorldSkills International, competitors of National Skills Competition shall be under the age of 21.
The competition is divided into District Preliminary Competition and National Skills Competition. In addition to prizes and medals, the top 3 winners of District Preliminary Competition along with the top 5 winners of National Skills Competition are entitled to receive further instructions in the related departments of vocational high schools, colleges, and universities based on Selection and Recommendation Admission Regulations Regarding Technically and Artistically Talented Students at Middle/Senior High Schools & Institutions of High Learning to become intellectuals of technical theories and skills.
In accordance with Regulations for Technician Certification and Licensing, competitors passing the National Skills Competition may skip the field test when attending Class B or Class C Skills Certification of the same trade within 3 years from one’s passing day.

1.1 Competition Schedule:

1.1.1 From Apr. 24 to Apr. 26, 2019:

The District Preliminary Competition of the 48th National Skills Competition will be taken place in Taoyuan-Hsinchu-Miaoli Regional Branch of the Workforce Development Agency, Taichung-Changhua-Nantou Regional Branch of the Workforce Development Agency, and Yunlin-Chiayi-Tainan Regional Branch of the Workforce Development Agency respectively.

1.1.2 Sep. 16 to Sep. 20, 2019 (in Taichung):

The 49th National Skills Competition will take place at the Taichung-Changhua-Nantou Regional Branch of the Workforce Development Agency, seperately.

1.2 Contest Categories:

There are 47 contest categories including Polymechanics/Automation, Plastic Die Engineering, Manufacturing Team Challenge, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering Design - CAD、CNC Turning, CNC Milling, Construction Metal Works, IT Software Solutions for Business, Welding, Prototype Modelling, Wall and Floor Tiling, Autobody Repair, Sheet Metal Technology, Plumbing and Heating, Electronics, Web Design, Electrical Installations, Industrial Control, Bricklaying, Painting and Decorating, Plastering and Drywall Systems, Cabinetmaking, Joinery, Jewellery, Floristry, Ladies/Mens Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Fashion Technology, Patisserie and Confectionery, Automobile Technology, Cooking, Restaurant Service, Car Painting, Landscape Gardening, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, IT Network Systems Administration, Graphic Design Technology, Bakery, Industrial Mechanic Millwright, Aircraft Maintenance, Health and Social Care, Mobile Robotics,Chinese Cooking, National Costume, Foundry, Applied Electronics, etc.

II. National Skills Competition for the Disabled(全國身心障礙者技能競賽)

National Skills Competition for the Disabled are held to inspire the confidence, perseverance and courage of the disabled so that they may leave their misery behind and get involved in the social and economic production, developing their potential, and realizing personal goals. The society, especially the hirers, may reevaluate and recognize the work ability of the disabled, and offer them the opportunities of employment.
To comply with the International Abilympic held every 4 years, National Skills Competition for the Disabled have been held until the end of 1995 since 1984. However, in order to encourage the disabled to obtain more skills, the competition has been altered to take place every 2 years since 1998.
The prizes and medals the top 3 winners of National Skills Competition for the Disabled are awarded are the same as the top 3 winners of National Skills Competition. Besides, to encourage the disabled to become intellectuals with profound knowledge and excellent skills, in the August of 1996, the Ministry of Education assembled all related organizations and academies to make a conclusion: the top 3 winners of National Skills Competition for the Disabled and those of International Skills Abilympic are entitled to receive further instructions in the related departments of all public or private colleges and universities based on Selection and Recommendation Admission Regulations Regarding Technically and Artistically Talented Students at Middle/Senior High Schools & Institutions of High Learning. This is truly a great policy to stimulate the disabled youth.

2.1 Competition Schedule:

From Nov. 1st to Nov. 3rd , 2018:
The 15th National Skills Competition for the Disabled will be held in Taipei-Keelung-Yilan-Hualien-Kinmen-Matsu Regional Branch of the Workforce Development Agency.

2.2 Contest Categories:

There are 27 contest categories: Basket Making, Furniture Making, Computer Programming, Creating Web Pages, CAD—Machinery, Data Processing-Advanced Course, Pottery, Silk Painting(Handpainting), Dress Making- Basic Course, Tailoring, Electronic Assembly and Testing, Jewelry Making, Photography, Poster Design, English Desktop Publishing, Cake Decoration, PC Assembly, Wood Carving, English Word Processing, Bicycle Assembly(Mechanical Assembly, Cooking, Sign Design, Dress Making - Advanced Course, CAD-3D, Computer Operation, Floral Arrangement, Chinese Text Processing.

III. WorldSkills Competition(國際技能競賽)

WorldSkills Competition was initially organized by Spain in 1950. There are so far 79 countries (regions) joining in the WorldSkills . The secretariat of WorldSkills is established in Netherlands. This international organization is aimed at increasing opportunities for worldwide young technicians to learn from each other to build up mutual understanding and for counties to enhance the exchange information and experience concerning vocational training and education by means of events like international skill competitions and seminars. The development of vocational training and education worldwide would move forward through this grand event.
WorldSkills Competition is held every 2 years. The competition now has been held 44 times since 1950, and the competition categories had increase from 12 to 50. Taiwan attended the organization in 1970 at the first time. Since the 20th WorldSkills Competition, Taiwan government had sent its extraordinary competitors regularly to take part in the event and their excellent performance had been widely recognized by the judgments from other countries. In 1993, Taiwan first hosted the 32nd WorldSkills Competition in Taipei from July 19th to Aug. 2nd and it had reached great success.
The 44th WorldSkills Competition took place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from Oct. 14th to Oct. 19th, 2017. Taiwan sent 47 competitors to compete in 42 skill categories and brought home 4 gold medals, 1 silver medals, 5 bronze medals and 27 awards for excellence. Moreover, Taiwan came to the 4th place in terms of the total amount of medals.

From Aug. 22nd to Aug. 27th, 2019: The 45th WorldSkills Competition will be hosted in Kazan, Russia.

IV. National Skills Competition for Adult(全國職場達人盃技能競賽)

2019 National Skills Competition for Adult took place in Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall 1 from Feb. 22nd to Feb. 25th, 2019.

V. Vocational Skills Competition of International Abilympic(國際展能節職業技能競賽)

The 1st IA was held in Tokyo in 1981 to commemorate the United Nations’ International Year of Disabled Persons. It received the wide support of both governmental and non-governmental organizations. His Imperial Highness, the Crown Prince (Present Emperor of Japan) served as Patron of the 1st IA.
Japan has held the vocational skills contests for persons with disabilities since 1972 with the aims of improving the vocational skills of people with disabilities in order to promote their participation in socio-economic activities. The title "Abilympics" was coined from the phrase "Olympics of Abilities."
The Abilympics have helped to overturn traditional views in regard to the skills, potentials and abilities of disabled persons, resulting in increased employment opportunities and vocational stability.
 
The experience and expertise of Japan’s National Abilympics was utilized at the 1st IA. In addition to the skills contests, there were various demonstrations as well as exhibitions and international seminars, all of which contributed to raise public awareness on the subject of persons with disabilities, their vast potential and the contribution that they can make to society.
